In this section of the wiki, certain "explorations" are posted. These are recommended learning investigations that incorporate the kinds of digital, 21st century learning skills that we're currently investigating.

Any time spent on these explorations can be logged into your time spent on this experience and will accumulate towards the maximum of 30 PDUs. Be sure to mention which of the explorations your investing your time in on your log sheet as you progress through the Summer.

These explorations are non-linear, they do not necessarily build on one another. Therefor, you can do these out of sequence, and you may decide to skip some of them altogether.

  • Create a blog to be used for journaling (sharing) your findings and perspectives throughout this experience. Allow others to comment on your blog and respond to the comments that you receive. When your blog is created, please update the "Personal Perspectives" section of this wiki, and include the URL to your blog in the table provided. Online tutorials for using "Blogger", a very approachable blogging service owned by Google, can be found in the "Documentation, Tutorials, and Resources" section of our wiki.

  • Using mindmeister, create and share a mindmap of one of your favorite chapters from either of the two texts handed out in the kick-off session. Your method of sharing could include twitter (#btb21 is our summer experience hashtag), this wiki, your blog, etc.

  • Check out a master blogger's blog , related directly to the kinds of 21st century, connective learning that we're talking about in this experience. His name is Will Richardson, and he has been part of the read / write web movement from the beginning. Find his blog at: http://weblogg-ed.com/. Be sure to post comments if you feel strongly about a post, not just at his blog, but everywhere.

  • Using Evernote, create notes / outlines for a favorite chapter in on of the two texts that were handed-out during our kick-off meeting, then share them out.

  • Setup an RSS feed for each of the blogs located on this site, and any other site that you'd like to track. RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is a hugely effective technology for teaching information how to come to you, instead of you having to go to it. The "Documentation, Tutorials, and Resources" section has all you need to get started on this exploration.

  • Create a Skype account and list your Skype account to the contact list on the wiki. Using Skype, search for other class participants and add them to your contact list. When able, contact one of the other participants when they are online and available. Try to coordinate a video conference between you and other participants working on the same section of the P21 model.

  • Through a Google search, find the TED website. If you watch a TED session (doesn't have to be about education necessarily) that you find to be particularly engaging, share it with others via a blog post, describing what you found engaging about the content. If you find someone that you strongly disagree with, let us know about that too.

  • For more education specific TED Talks, try searching Youtube with the following as your query, "TEDxNY". This will bring up the session done at an independent TED gathering in NY, specifically speaking to issues in education.

  • Use your blog to react to a chapter in either of the two texts distributed to participants. This reaction could be positive or negative in relation to content gleaned from your readings. Also important here is to find other participant blogs and comment on their posts. For every post you write, try to leave at least three comments on other participant blogs.

  • Attend an educators' social in the online virtual world of SecondLife. ISTE (the International Society for Technology in Education) has a virtual island that they use to host frequent educators' socials, where teachers in K-12 and higher-ed from around the world meet to collaborate and share ideas and resources. You can find all that you need to get started in the "Documentation, Tutorials, and Resources" section of our wiki. The ISTE ISland events calendar has all the dates and times of the gatherings for the months. There are "Newcomer Socials" and "Educator Socials", both are appropriate for our exploration. Please note, all times are Pacific time, so add three hours for our EST time.

  • Using Twitter, send any BeyondTheBuzz related tweets using our own hashtag, which will be #btb21, and use Tweetdeck to monitor that hashtag via a search column.

  • Through Twitter, participate in one of the weekly #edchat sessions. For details on how to do so, see the Documentation, Tutorials, and Resources page.
